Am I missing something with the Weapon XP mod?

I like the idea of the weapons having their own xp, but I feel as if I'm just missing something. My rarity is increasing, but it's gray and the only way to increase damage is by adding blocks like usual. Should I get my rarity up to 5 gray stars and then after that I'll get the first color rarity star? Or am I just dumb?

I really want to play the alpha version rather than the steam one, and I wasn't lucky enough to get an account while I could. I don't want to pirate the game.

Hi!
i could not find an answer for this one.

I got my beta key from the picroma site, when the game hit beta, but my friend did not and now its not possible to log into the picroma site any more. Do you guys know, where he can get his key? He bought the game in alpha and is not keen on paying a second time around. Cant find any info about it on the cubeworld website either.
