New playable class: Monk, beta version available

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 03:14 AM PST

    https://github.com/LockManipulator/Monk-Class/releases

This is a BETA version so there are some known bugs (see below). It's in a "playable" state though. If anyone wants to try it out and let us know any thoughts on it, that'd be great!

    Class info:

The monk class is barehanded fighter. You can't equip any weapons but you can equip any armor you find. Your damage starts at a base of 5 and ~6% of your max hp gets added to damage, which feels balanced.

Your shift ability lays down a trail of fire, in exchange for mana (fire damage is based on your normal attack damage and combo). You also never lose mana over time, only when using your shift ability!

Your ultimate gives you max hp (and you can use it while alive AND dead to revive yourself, not as broken as you might think since the cooldown stops counting when you die, no waiting to revive everytime) and also invisibility for a bit to help you get out of a dangerous situation you just died in.

Your right click consumes all mana and does a kick and stuns.

    Installation:

Use with Chris's mod launcher version "1.0.0-1_4.2_v2" from https://github.com/ChrisMiuchiz/Cube-World-Mod-Launcher/releases (NOT the latest release). Just put the newclass.dll into your mods folder. Basically, your Cube World folder should contain "CubeModLoader.fip" and a "Mods" folder. Your "Mods" folder should contain newclass.dll.

    KNOWN BUGS:

DO NOT open chests (unless it's for an artifact). If it tries to give you a weapon, you will crash.

Crafting tabs are broken right now and you can't really craft.

Maayyybbeee getting hit by enemy abilities can crash the game? I think I fixed all cases of this, but if the game crashes while in combat, let me know what enemy and ability they used if possible.

You don't actually show as invis when you ult, just accept it. It lasts for about 15-20 sec so a mob not already aggro'd on you won't see you during that time unless you punch it.

"Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it" - Cube World vs Dawn of Mana

"Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it" - Cube World vs Dawn of Mana

In the year 2006, Square Enix was seen as one of the world's largest creators of new RPGs. Each new release of the company received international attention, and we all lived in a "golden age" with the rise of PS2 as one of the most successful video games in history. Games like Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, Final Fantasy X, Front Mission 4, Kingdom Hearts II and Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria were just some of the company's releases that left their mark in a generation of gamers.

But among all the famous series that Square had, we have the Mana series. With legendary games that made an astonishing success in the SNES, even with the fact that the third game in the series (at the time) has not received an official translated version (but being one of the fan-favorite games on emulation sites with unofficial translations), many players were thrilled with the announcement of what would be considered the fourth official game: Dawn of Mana, or Seiken Densetsu 4.

In the pictures, previews and videos of the ads at the time, fans could see signs of a great game in production. Several of the classic monsters were present, stylized graphics of such quality that even today are considered beautiful by many, and with a team of extremely experienced composers. The game had everything to be one of Square's biggest hits, and be a triumphant return to the series in the West, creating a new legion of fans.

But the game was a significant failure for Square outside Japan. Small sales, and most of the reviews were negative. What happened?

Unlike previous games in the Mana series, Dawn of Mana has abandoned some of the features that made previous games RPGs: instead of having an interconnected world, the game was divided into chapters. Which in itself was not a huge problem, but combined with the other issue, it caused a explosive negative reaction. At the end of each chapter, the stats of all equips were reset to 0, and the level of the character was reset to 1.

AKA, in Dawn of Mana, there was no character progression. Each "area" of the game was a separate, closed area, and by completing that area, you were to start the entire process practically from scratch. Sounds familiar?

Players hated it. Reviewers hated it. Yeah, some people liked the game and defend it to this day saying that it is one of the best games in the series. Some people got to see the many positive points of the game (and it has many, no doubt) even with that big problem. But for the overwhelming majority of people, that was enough to break the game. It was no longer fun, it was no longer interesting; it was a disaster.

The motives then were the same as today. Nothing new, nothing that hasn't been discussed until it was exhausted here, or everywhere. The objectives at the time were no different from those of today, and the results, not surprisingly, were also similar. Even the great Squaresoft could not predict the size of the problem that it was creating, only realizing the failure after the international release of the game.

The lesson Square learned at the time was simple: often, an idea sounds interesting and even incredible in theory, but the result in practice can be immensely different. It is often necessary to look outside, beyond the team itself to realize if a mechanic really works. This is a lesson that many people have been lucky enough to learn without having to experience it, as they have had the chance to see Square's failure with the Mana series. But it's a lesson that only those who saw the moment or know the history of the games really understood.

And as the saying goes, those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it.
