The massive downgrade of ocean landmasses from alpha to beta

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 04:38 AM PDT

I convinced my alpha player friend to try the beta.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 03:27 AM PDT

TL;TR: we played for less than 30 mins and he ALT F4.

He started as a mage and I gave him some items so that he doesn't have to stand back and watch when I kill all the mobs. I gave him a purple shoulder, a purple armor and a legendary staff, and after that he just "1-shot" every mob with his fire spells. Every time he killed some enemies, he said something like "Idk why I even killed those mobs, I don't even get any exp, so what's the point". We kept running until we crossed a border to another region without noticing. He was like "why the fuck I deal 1 damage with my spells", and then I realized that we had crossed a border. I explained it to him and he was like "lmao what a dumb fucking feature". I tried to boost his morale by telling him that Arena's are quite fun for first timers. We started walking towards the closest one but it was far away and got boring so my friend ALT F4.

That made me realize, why even I try to play this game. It really feels like its just a shell of a game, there is no soul into it.

Found this guy on an island

Everybody is posting pictures holding their favorite petso I thought I would post a picture of mine as well.

    Gee, I wonder why?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 08:05 AM PDT

I will wait even longer for this game, I dont think it's worthy/ready for release.

    Posted: 27 Sep 2019 07:50 PM PDT

I bought this game when i was 12, I'm 18 now. I'd say i have accumulated around 200 hours in the cube-world alpha over the past 6 years. Most of the time i played was when it came out, but i found myself returning to the game just every now and then to see if anyones on the PvP servers, or just trying to beat the PvE content with a new class/spec, and for the timeless art style & world of course. Cube world became one of my favorite games of all time, because it's given me some great memories playing with friends, the bright future the game had seemed to have, and for the renown idea of a procedurally generated RPG.

...Playing the beta... i seriously had a lot of fun in the first few hours, feeling like "I'm finally playing Cube World." But i began to realize that something was all too familiar about this experience. I quickly began to notice that this game still has many of the fundamental problems it had in the alpha... and then i began scouring Reddit for other people's opinions, and realized the game now has problems that are totally new (I wont list them or go into detail about what i think the core game issues are, because we all basically recognize them)... I'm no longer having fun anymore. Now after 20 hours, I just don't want to play anymore, there is nothing left to do. I feel like this version of the game offers a much worse whole experience than what the alpha had to offer... I know alot of people have expressed the same feeling, and i think this only validates this sentiment, because it really is a rare thing to say about most videogames.

Concerning the past 6 years of development... i'm just confused? Screenshots on twitter kept making this game look better, and better, and better over the past years... but where is any of it? I can only assume he started over AGAIN, but super late into development, spent some time rebuilding the game from the ground up and then... released this...? Why? I can't help but think; how did he NOT have the foresight to see that this game was going to fail A LOT of people's expectations? Now, i know that this was a passion project, this is not wol_lay's full time job... But it doesn't even feel like six years of passion could have went into this game, since so little has been actually added. Off this fact, i think it's incredibly naive to expect all of the issues we have with the game to be fixed post-launch. Wol_lay is seemingly afraid of the whole community because of the few bad apples, and theres nothing we can do about that. He has never taken feedback to game mechanics.. Plus, we know his work-ethic, we are not going to get a big steady stream of updates along with a road-map guys, sorry. I am fully preparing for vers 1.0 to be the final release of the game, and for him to say "screw it, i'm done"

But I don't hold my $20 to wol_lay still after all this time, i dont feel like he still OWES me a video game... For only 20$, I had tons of fun playing this game in alpha! And this game holds a significant part of my late-childhood memories, and all this time i kept watching videos about cube-world, checking his twitter to see if he's ghosting us or showing off cool new stuff! keeping my hope & hype for six years... But i'm not hyped at all anymore, and i don't have any hope for the game anymore. The release has cut any reason to hype or hope anymore; the game is finally here. But sadly, i'm jumping off the cube-world train now. I had a lot fun with the game itself, and being a part of the hype train on twitter, youtube, and reddit, but it's over. I enjoy the thought of this game much more than the game itself. It was fun while it lasted.

There is more to + weapons than the adjacent region

There is more to + weapons than the adjacent region

I've gotten used to using this green staff in new areas, being my first + weapon and having chucked all the wood cubes I could on it. I didn't question it when it was my best available weapon moving in to the Rogor hills, but it occurred to me just now that didn't I clear every region around Ikoka Plains already?

Double checking, I am indeed 2 regions away from the Ikoka Plains and my Adjusted Wood Staff + is STILL WORKING.

Map showing 1 region gap between the Rogor Hills and Ikoka Plains, but the + staff from the Ikoka Plains still works.

I just double checked the rest of my + gear and there is a filament chest armor which also works from the Ikoka Plains.

Another Ikoka Plains item that works in the Rogor Hills.

All my other + items are working exactly like they should under the "region you found it and all the ones that touch it" rule I previously thought was true, so I'm trying to figure out what sets the Ikoka Plains apart.

    1. It was my starting region.
    2. I got every artifact I think there is in all the surrounding regions
    3. There are two connecting regions with all the artifacts (that I could find) taken
    4. I'm pretty sure I completed every damn quest in the Ikoka Plains there is, upon inspection I was not that fastidious in the other regions

I got + items from the other regions too, but only the ones from the adjacent Jakin Hills are working (I didn't find any plus items for my class in the Deadlands of Gaben). So I can rule out a couple of other things.

    1. 3 other regions fully connected to the Rogor Hills by explored regions have + items which aren't working here, so it's not about a full connection
    2. I feel like I got all the artifacts I could in the other regions where I found my other + items but they're still conforming to the original +1 rule

So I did some more testing!

I rushed to the Kumore Ocean, a zone with 2 low level quests I skipped due to the lack of good loot and no reason to complete them.

Kumore Ocean + item that works in the Deadlands of Gaber

Success! Another + item that works where it shouldn't!

    But there's a caveat!

IT DOESN'T WORK IN THE ROGOR HILLS.

Fully completing the zone seems to have extended the range of the item.

I have confirmed that this doesn't work in an uncompleted zone with an item from the Marnis Ocean that (didn't finish the arena) which only works with 1 range.

Inspecting the rest of my items, the 2 range if a zone is completed rule is 100% consistent with all my items wherever I've fast traveled to check it working so far. Ikoka Plains, and now Kurmore Ocean items all have 2 range.

I haven't seen anyone report this yet, just the myth about all items being upgraded to + upon finishing. We can add a new piece of information about how + gear works!

    1. A plus item will work with full stats in any adjacent region
    2. If you fully complete a region, the item will now work in all regions 2 regions away (i.e. +1 effective range)

I feel extremely validated by this, I set the task of continuing to push the one character to see what happens and I have uncovered a mechanic which potentially increases the effective area of +items by an absurd amount.

I haven't proven this +1 range thing in all directions, merely deduced that it doesn't work at 3 range though, I'll continue to monitor that this rule works but so far, all my + gear is conforming to the above 2 rules.

My final, test was to travel to a region I've never been to. The Deadlands of Thaldan.

Here items from the Ikoka Plains (2 regions away), the Kurmore Ocean (2 regions away), and the Marnis Ocean (1 region away) all work. Ikoka Plains and Kurmore Ocean are both completed. Jakin Hills is not complete, is 2 regions away, and the + items DO NOT WORK. Going to a totally new region and checking which items work and which don't, the rules work perfectly.

In the case of the Ikoka Plains, I can use that old faithful green staff in an additional TWELVE regions until I have to stop using it. If I find a legendary + item, I can use it for a very, very long time before I have to replace it if I complete that region. Now that I've discovered this, the power of the items I'll be using when I cross border regions is going to go up a lot as I back track and complete the regions where I found my best + items.

I'm just giddy with excitement. I hope someone else can confirm my findings.

I will buy this game the moment artifacts are meaningful.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 03:54 AM PDT

I have been lurking around, have seen a ton of streams, have read a lot of the criticism this game is getting. From what I can tell, removing the region lock of combat gear would have you cruising through the rest of the game, it would absolutely kill the longetivity of it.

The game would be completely fine if the artifacts were worth it to grind for. Maybe give them some meaningful stats, or maybe have artifacts that make you keep the boat/handglider/harp permanently. I honestly don't know, I am just a guy who does his due diligence before purchasing a game, not a game designer, but I feel like if I were to purchase the game right now it will stay interesting for exactly one region.

Give me and my friends an incentive to grind them artifacts and we will be all over this game.

Least Effort Required to Improve Cube World

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 08:41 AM PDT

I was brainstorming how little one would have to change Cube World to fix it drastically, to help speculate on how fast Wollay may be able to... rescue the situation, let's say.

I actually have experience making games, making one right now, but if it were up to me, I'd do the following:

    • -No more region lock on gear! This feature cannot and should not be redeemed. I'm honestly a bit baffled it exists since it directly discourages exploration. I have played this game for many hours and I just feel like I'm not allowed to explore. I still haven't seen any other zones... this is just pointlessly frustrating and transparent gating.
    • -DRASTICALLY reduce rarity-rate of dropped items, rare items should actually BE rare, not just "the next color of item you will fill your equip slots with instantly". Currently, finding strong loot is not exciting due to its ubiquity and impermanence.
    • -Enemy difficulty scales GENTLY by distance to home region, with mob star-level/rarity only comparing relative strength to player stats (Effortless, Easy, Matched, Challenging, Dangerous). The home region will be calculated in multiplayer as the host's home region.
    • -Smooth out the spectrum of combat strength between mobs of a single region
    • -Allow player to keep special key items, and in places where the player would find that item again, instead give the special item a small upgrade (like current artifacts), or maybe just a loot drop if its not a thing that can be upgraded.
    • -Make special item quests/places more spread out. It would feel much better to slowly find and upgrade these across multiple regions of one's grand adventure. It feels very weird to get these items and not be able to use them across regions for no discernible reason. Especially the boat. Like... come on. It's a boat, for the ocean. And you can't cross the dang ocean with it any more. That's just.... ugh I won't rant.
    • -Artifacts give small random combat stat upgrades, and increasing one's total artifacts (level) slightly expands maximum potential stats (regardless of rarity) of all future dropped gear, allowing one to adventure a bit further afield and chase after ever-better loot protected by ever-tougher enemies. "I'm a bit stronger, and everything I do from now on will be more rewarding and help me get further!" is the feeling I CRAVE here.

    ----

The intention of all this is to allow the player to go in any direction they like and not feel like they lose anything, as well as doing what I think Wollay intended with the beta changes, which is encouraging players to stay in one zone for a bit for completion rewards and questing. Not to mention, we just GOTTA throw the progression-reset mechanics in the trash.

A big, fat NOPE to progression resets.

Cube World will need more than this to be truly great, but I think with these small, easy changes (in terms of programming effort required) it could go from a 6 to an 8 real fast.

The question is whether Wollay wants to compromise his vision and acquiesce to feedback.

That said, I can't say for sure how Wollay has Cube World set up, so it could just be that every single thing I listed is infeasible somehow. Could also be complications with multiplayer difficulty scaling, but I can't imagine it's insurmountable... It certainly beats joining someone's game and all your gear going to crap... just... not a good idea.

Do you think these are good, easy-to-do ideas? Feel free to

I've been seeing a lot of half truths lately

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 07:18 AM PDT

What in the world is this monstrosity!?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 09:29 AM PDT

PSA: Ocean Zones are NOT an absolute nightmare - this is why.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 06:28 AM PDT

I think there are still quite a few people who have not realized this and are afraid to step foot in an ocean zone because of the dreaded search for the boat which will make travel between islands actually bearable, but lemme tell you something.

Until you pick up a boat in the ocean zone, there will be a boat ready to be picked up on every single island (not sure if every small pillar or piece of land as well, probably not), so it's not the usual "Oh you need to randomly find an NPC that tells you of a single boat spawn location to explore the zone efficiently" but rather, you hop on the first island in the zone, there's a boat waiting for you no matter what.

Ocean zones are also really comfy, you can see exactly where the points of interest in the map are, because there's no "filler" land or areas between them. If there's a piece of land in an ocean zone, guaranteed there is something of interest there.

This cuts back a lot of the time spent whacking your way through that dense jungle or having to find your way around that lava-river to -maybe- find something of interest.

I'd say if artifacts are your goal Ocean zones are one of if not the best zones to go explore because of the ease of access and the plain visibility of everything in the zone.

Also, you don't have to constantly hold forward to move on a boat, just tap a direction and sit back until you crash on shore.
